• Create centres of excellence for research into heart disease throughout the country, headed by BHF professors
• Support research into the causes, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease through five-year rolling programmes, short-term projects and fellowships
• Inform the medical profession of advances in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease, and to encourage discussion of current research
• Inform members of the public of the ways in which they may reduce the risk of heart disease or ameliorate its effects
• Promote training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation
• Help patients with heart disease by providing information and by encouraging rehabilitation and self-support groups
• Provide essential equipment for hospitals and other health providers
